Borsuk infantry fighting vehicle makes its debut

Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW) unveiled a Borsuk tracked infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) variant equipped with a ZSSW-30 remote controlled turret at the International Defence Industry Exhibition MSPO.

The vehicle is being developed under the New Amphibious Infantry Fighting Vehicle programme to replace the BWP-1 (BMP-1) IFV in service with the Polish Armed Forces.

The model unveiled in Kielce is scheduled to undergo driving and swimming tests in late 2017 and early 2018 before being destroyed in a mine protection test during the second quarter of 2018. Planning foresees assembly of the first Borsuk prototype in the third quarter of 2018. Factory trials will be conducted from the fourth quarter of 2018 until the second quarter of 2019. Qualification testing is scheduled to begin in late 2019, and the order for serial production is expected in 2021.

Borsuk is an amphibious tracked vehicle powered by an eight-cylinder 816hp (600 kW) MTU 8V199TE20 engine coupled with a four-speed forward and two-speed reverse Perkins X300 transmission.

The chassis is made of welded armoured steel with STANAG 4569/A Level 2 ballistic protection, which can be upgraded to Level 4 with additional add-on ceramic or composite plates.

The amphibious Borsuk weighs 25 tons and the non-swimming variant with additional armour plates up to 30 tons.

The vehicle features a hydropneumatic suspension from Horstman Defence Systems of the United Kingdom. The final version will have DST rubber tracks, and one model has steel tracks.

The Borsuk IFV variant is designed to carry three crew members – commander, gunner, and driver – and six fully equipped infantry soldiers.
