US State Department approves sale of PAC-3 MSE missiles to South Korea

The US Department of State has approved a possible USD501 million Foreign Military Sale to South Korea of 64 Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptor missiles, the US Defense Security Co-operation Agency (DSCA) announced in a 13 September statement.

Also included in the proposed sale, which still needs to be approved by the US Congress, are two PAC-3 MSE test missiles; personnel training; publications and technical documentation; range and test programmes; spare parts; training equipment; US government and contractor technical, engineering, and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistics and programme support.

South Korea “will use the Patriot missile system to improve its missile defence capability, defend its territorial integrity and deter threats to regional stability”, said the DSCA, adding that the proposed sale “will increase the defensive capabilities of the ROK [Republic of Korea] military to guard against hostile aggression and shield the allies who train and operate within South Korea’s borders”.
