TrailBlazer Sonar - Mine and Obstacle Avoidance

The TrailBlazer Sonar® has been developed by General Dynamics Canada and Marport C-Tech Ltd. to provide excellent mine and obstacle avoidance coverage. Shallow water environments in particular are hostile to sonar performance; they have poorer propagation conditions and higher reverberation levels than typical deep-water environments. Moreover, the propagation and reverberation characteristics vary radically in the littoral environment where bottom depths can vary dramatically over distance of a few kilometres.

TrailBlazer Sonar® is designed to provide optimum performance in a mine and obstacle avoidance role. Variable pulse lengths, waveforms, and bandwidths along with variable degrees of processing coherency allow performance optimization against a broad range of low-target-strength targets ranging from zero-Doppler, severely reverberation-limited bottom targets, to high Doppler water-column targets.

In particular, low sidelobe levels together with the high directivity achieved through the narrow horizontal receive beams with a variable horizontal transmission sector make the sonar well suited for use for mine and obstacle avoidance in shallow water area with highly variable topography. In addition, the dry-end software provides optimized digital signal processing and display functions in an open architecture environment to ease integration to the vessel’s combat system and support cost effective future growth.

Matador - Torpedo Detection System

The Matador Torpedo Detection System has been developed by General Dynamics Canada to provide unprecedented coverage against any torpedo threat. Littoral waters provide a complex environment for planning and detection. Bottom/surface reflections and high levels of ambient noise increase false alarm probabilities. Deep Ocean environments provide their own acoustic complexities as low frequency sound can propagate long distances and have adverse affects on the detecting sensor. Matador provides unparalleled threat detection capability in all of these challenging environments.

Matador is designed to interface to any underwater warfare sensor and provide superior performance in a torpedo detection,tracking and classification role. Multiple Integration Periods and Resolutions, as well as new Normalization schemes, work together to offer an optimized sensor detection configuration in any environment against any threat.

In addition, an improved Open Architecture Operator Machine Interface ensures that an efficient situational awareness picture is offered to maximize evasion time against the threat.

Acoustic Technology Evolution

General Dynamics Canada has taken an evolutionary approach to the development of its acoustic processor mission system. Research and development efforts have introduced a number of industry-leading innovations.

Modular VME Acoustic Signal Processor (MVASP)

This sonobuoy processor leverages the latest advances in parallel processing to provide state-of-the-art acoustic processing for up to 64 sonobuoys. It features an intuitive interface and advanced tools to reduce operator workload while increasing situational awareness.

General Dynamics Canada’s sonobuoy acoustic processors are capable of processing any sonobuoy in fleet use today. Our scalable architecture allows processing for up to 64 sonobuoys of any mix, whether analogue, digital, passive or active.
