The Norwegian Armed Forces have joined the expert speaker line-up for the 6th annual conference on Social Media within the Defence & Military Sector which takes place on 14 & 15 November 2016 in Central London.

Georg Austad, Head of Social Media and Harald Nygaard Kvam, Digital Editor of the Norwegian Armed Forces Media Centre will be representing the army as they lead a presentation on “The Power of Social Media During Military Exercises” on Day 1 of the conference with a focus on how social media was conducted and utilised during Exercise Cold Response 2016.

Hosted by Norway, Cold Response is an annual exercise that lets cooperating nations to train under rough winter conditions. With a participation of over 15,000 personnel from over 10 countries, Mr Austad and Mr Kwam will be discussing how they have raised the profile of the armed forces in the modern age and supported the narrative of allied activities in the Norwegian territory. They will also be speaking about integrating social media into military engagements amongst the local population.

In the run-up to the event, SMi Group spoke to Mr Austad and Mr Kvam about how armed forces are responding to social media. “As for Norway, we believe we are reacting quite well to the ebbs and flows of social media. We are dedicated to learning and experimenting, but all the while keeping with our main motto of ‘Respect, Responsibility and Courage’. We believe the results we are seeing from our social media channels shows a clear success rate when we look at recruiting.”

When asked about how they envision the future of social media within the defence industry, they responded, "In an engagement we believe social media will play a major role regarding information /disinformation, intelligence, cyber warfare etc. We have seen some of this already in different conflicts, and that will probably evolve as nations focus more and more on this in regards to (e.g.) information warfare, gathering etc."
